How To Thin Out A Wig To Look More Natural

by yuyiwigs 21 May 2025 0 comments

Wigs are incredibly versatile, offering a vast array of styles and colors that rival those of natural hair. But what if you've found the perfect style, yet the wig feels or looks too thick? Thinning it out can be the key to achieving a sleeker, more natural appearance.

How To Thin Out a Wig?

When it comes to thinning your wig, you've got two main choices:
You can head to a professional salon and enlist the help of a skilled hairstylist, or you can take the DIY route. Now, of course, finding a hairstylist with specific wig - handling experience is the ideal scenario. But most hairstylists should be able to tackle this task. Just keep in mind, this convenience comes with a price tag. As we all know, professional hairstylists usually charge a premium for their services, right?
You might be wondering, "Can I thin out my wig on my own?" While it can be a bit challenging at times, doing it yourself can save you some serious cash! If you're confident in your skills, here are some handy tips to guide you through the process.
Have you ever gotten a wig that's super thick and dense around the hairline? It just doesn't give that natural look you're going for. Well, YiWigs is here to walk you through the steps to fix that.

How to thin out a wig: things to prepare

If you've decided to take matters into your own hands and thin your wig, there are a few essential tools you'll need. First and foremost, you'll need thinning shears (definitely not regular scissors, as they can damage your wig). The fine teeth on thinning shears are specifically designed to trim hair in a way that gives it a realistic, natural - looking finish. Additionally, gather some other basic items like hair clips and brushes.

How to thin out a wig by yourself?

Let's dive right in!

Determine the thinning areas

Start by putting on the wig and taking a good look in the mirror. Visualize the final look you want to achieve and decide exactly where you want to thin out the hair. This mental picture will be your roadmap as you start the thinning process.

Create a section to work on

Next, part the hair on the wig to isolate the specific area you want to thin. Use the front tooth or the precision tip of a comb, place it against your scalp, and gently move the comb from front to back to create a clean part. Then, secure the sections of hair you're not working on with hair clips.

Prepare to trim

Take a small section of hair between your fingers. Position the thinning shears as close to the root as you can while still catching the full strands of hair. Once you've got the shears in place, hold the hair section firmly and then set the shears down for a moment.

Remove the excess hair

Now, comb through the section of hair you're holding. The comb will catch all those little bits of hair that the thinning shears have cut, effectively removing the excess.

Repeat the process

Keep repeating steps 2 - 4 until you've thinned out all the sections of the wig that you planned to. Once you're done, give the wig one final comb - through and style it as you like.

Tips And Tricks

Tip 1

Before you even start thinning, place your wig on a wig stand or head form. Then, use a comb to section the hair into even parts. This simple step makes the whole process much more manageable.

Tip 2

When you begin thinning, start from the top of the hair, not the bottom. Focus your efforts on the middle layers of the hair rather than the outer layers. And whatever you do, don't cut too close to the root. Doing so can result in short, stubby hairs that stick up and look unnatural.

Tip 3

If a layer of hair looks too blunt, here's a nifty trick: twist the hair and cut it at a 45 - degree angle. This will give you that soft, wispy look you're aiming for.

Tip 4

Always divide your hair into even sections and work on thinning one section at a time. You can either try on the wig periodically to check if you need to thin it more, or you can do the thinning while it's on your head. Just make sure you can reach the back of the hair easily. If not, ask a friend or family member for help to ensure an even look all around your head.

Tip 5

Regularly try on the wig to assess the hair density. Remember, it's always easier to cut more hair if needed, but you can't exactly put it back once it's gone. So, take your time, be patient, and most importantly, be cautious.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
